Checkered cape

Hello! We have enjoyed a snowless winter thus far (knock on wood!) in Chicago. Yesterday, when we took these pictures, the light was so beautiful in the afternoon that I had to take advantage of it. You can see my baby bump in these :) These are probably the first pictures we've taken where you can actually see it. So, second baby boy on the way... About the coat - I fell in love with it when I saw it on Asos. I love that it's a cape, but more importantly, I love the color of it. Fortunately, the weather has been allowing us to wear it, otherwise Chicago weather is not really making it easy to wear outerwear like that, as there are probably only a few days in the spring and fall that allow it. Hope your Holidays were lovely and a New Year 2015 brings wonderful things!

Wearing: Asos coat; Michael Kors leggings; Sam Edelman booties.

More summer looks...

One more summer look on the blog (I will have few more I think), as I have a good pile of photos taken over the summer that have just been sitting on my hard drive. We were on our way to a special birthday party that evening and we stopped on our way to take these photos. I am wearing one of my favorite, if not my favorite, black draped dress by All Saints. You can't really see the intricacy of the draping here, as it's covered by the vest, but you will... I wear this dress a lot and I am sure it will show up in more posts in the future. The vest is BCBG Max Azria purchased at Nordstrom Rack. I love shopping at Nordstrom Rack. Many years ago I would only go to purses and shoes sections and avoid the clothes, as it annoyed me how they were organized. I could never find anything and would just give up. Over the years though I learned which sections I need to go to and I usually don't bother going into others. Bargain shopping is so rewarding when you find something that is good quality and your style and you know you're paying a fraction of the original retail price. This vest cost only about $40! I am also wearing basic black 3/4 length leggings and Qupid shoes, which I bought on Amazon. I almost never buy any shoes on Amazon, but these caught my eye when I was shopping for something else and they cost only about $30 so I couldn't resist. They're not leather or any great quality material, but, let's face it, for those few times that I will wear these shoes, it was a purchase well worth it. I have to mention the ring too - I bought it on Etsy (another one of my favorite places to find some really good stuff); the seller was TheRogueAndTheWolf, and this one in particular cost about $20 (!) and I absolutely love it! They have some more items on Etsy, which are pretty amazing too. The ring is pretty fragile, so I wouldn't wear it everyday, only for special occasions, but for $20 you can't really ask for more. Such a statement piece. Make sure you visit the seller's page on Etsy. Thanks again for visiting!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! These photos were taken about a year ago :) These were my very FIRST ones I took with a blog in mind, but the blog itself came into shape much later. Hopefully winter in Chicago this year is not as bad as last year's when we took these pictures. It was especially cold and we had a lot of snow. But, before that happens (fortunately it hasn't hit us yet), let's all have a nice and yummy Thanksgiving with our families and friends.

Wearing: Zara jacket, Zara scarf, H&M sunglasses, Maison Scotch jeans (one of may favorites ever!), Apepazza booties.

While it's still nice out

One of the nicest weekends this past October, during which we took a stroll in the park with our son Leo (he squeezed himself in one of the pictures). We don't have many of those left before winter hits in Chicago.
About the outfit: I love this leather jacket purchased at Nordstrom Rack a couple of years ago. The leather is a really good quality and it's super soft, which enables its flowy effect. The Gap slacks I have on are one of my favorite pants I own. They are simple, but yet have really nice details like nice, sturdy stitching (which you can't see here, unfortunately), and zippered pockets in the front and the back. I am really into zippered pockets (pockets in general too) and details like that, even if I am the only one to see them and appreciate them :) I got them in a light beige color as well, which I often do, but now I regret not getting them in army green color while they were still available.

Wearing: Trouve leather jacket, Gap pants, Converse sneakers, H&M scarf (bought in Europe), Kelsi Dagger bag, Ray Ban sunglasses.

Something cheerful before summer ends...

Although summer is officially over (by calendar), let's still enjoy the beautiful weather and summer pleasures! The first picture was taken back in June during a Poland vacation. The orange purse is Gianni Chiarini purse, which I also own in green. The other images are just something I found very inspirational in that particular moment :) Hopefully where you live the weather is still nice, so let's enjoy it while it lasts. Thanks for visiting!

Beautiful, sunny day

These pictures were taken early spring  on one of the first warm days in Chicago. I was so excited I could finally wear cut out shoes and ditch the boots. Here, I am wearing simple black skinny pants (which I actually wear to work a lot!), which I love because they are just the perfect fit for me. I like that they are skinny around my calfs, but loose in my thighs and my butt. For the longest time (years and years) I would only wear skirts to work because I could never find the perfect (in my mind) work pants. Their fit was usually a straight leg which I don't enjoy. But finally I found those on Asos (of course!) and once I tried them on I ordered a second pair so that when these are all worn out I have a second pair to wear. I very often get doubles of items I really love. In this case both pairs I got in black, but sometimes I get different colors of the same items if I really love it. I am also wearing a camo Old Navy jacket, purchased recently, and a Helmut Lang bra in maroon, which I adore! The bra is such a show stopper thanks to the straps going across the chest. Every time I wear it, someone complements it. Helmut Lang is one of my favorite brands; too bad some items are very pricey and I can only dream of them. The brand's website also has a tank top with the same stripes concept, which I might eventually get… Thanks for visiting!

White soles

One of my recent purchases were these beautiful white sole peep toes by Jeffrey Campbell. I love how casual they are; yet, dressed up, they can be very elegant too. I have been wearing them a lot recently, even running errands, as the heels are quite comfortable too. When I first saw Stella McCartney's white sole pumps from few collections ago, I fell in love instantly. Of course, I could have never afford her shoes, so the hunt began. It was that much easier since EVERYONE started making white sole shoes: pumps, sneakers (see my leopard sneakers with white soles in one of my posts), booties, boots, oxfords, etc. I did not have any specific type of a shoe in mind, I just loved how sophisticated the white soles looked on ANY shoe. But when I saw these Jeffrey Campbells on FreePeople I fell in love just as quickly as I fell in love with Stella McCartney's.

Wearing: H&M t-shirt, Forever 21 pants, Jeffrey Campbell shoes, Swatch watch, necklace - bought at a vintage shop in AZ.

Here we go...

Hello and welcome! I am Monika (35), I currently live in Chicago with my husband and two beautiful boys. I am a creative spirit, who loves fashion and all things crafty. I love interior design and repurposing things as well. I have decided to start blogging about my personal style, all the things that inspire me, and my various fashion and home DIY projects. I grew up in Poland, but moved to Chicago in 1999 with my parents and my brother. I enjoy the idea of not spending too much on fashion, or should I say, enjoy spending money on fashion, but rather through bargain shopping and hunting for one of a kind pieces. I love getting my hands on good quality items at much lower than retail prices. Hence, frugalgals, the name of this blog. Since my closet is full of items that may no longer be available in stores (items collected and saved throughout the years), this blog will many times serve as an inspiration, which I am glad to share with everyone who visits it. I also, of course, get inspired by many trendy and 'in' items, but I always like to put my own spin on them and I don't blindly chase trends, but rather make them work for me and my personal style. I like mixing different styles for unconventional looks, as well as mixing masculine with feminine pieces, the old with the new, thrift store finds with current and on-trend items. My style sometimes goes through phases, but one constant thing is that I love edgy and unexpected items: clothing, jewelry and accessories. On that note, thank you for visiting my blog and enjoy!
