I am thrilled to start this new series on my blog with a few fellow blogger moms like myself. It’s a series that we are calling ‘Mom Talk Tuesdays’ and I am so excited to be sharing these posts with you that will include my/ our take on multitude of subjects on all things motherhood.
We are doing these monthly and always on a last Tuesday of the month so mark your calendars 🙂 But in all seriousness, I haven’t been posting too much about my family here but felt like that if I started to do so, this would be a great way to do it. So here goes…
Today’s topic is healthy eating habits for kids and my kids’ favorite snacks. But guys, don’t think anything I am sharing here makes me an expert on the subject… really! This is what I/ we do in our family and just wanted to provide you with a little snippet of it.
We’ve been parents for the last seven years (almost to the day) and of course when you have your first child everything changes. But unhealthy eating habits don’t necessarily fall under this change. For us, it wasn’t until we had our second son that we really started to think and care about what we eat. Not to say that before we were extremely unhealthy, no. I think we were doing OK but we also weren’t paying attention to every single label on the products we were buying.
Fast forward to now and I would say that pretty much almost everything we buy and consume is organic. I think in this day and age you almost have to because everything else is either processed foods or pesticide sprayed foods extremely bad for you. But gosh, yes, we pig out on unhealthy stuff too (remember how I said a few sentences ago that ‘almost everything we consume is organic’? Yes, ‘almost’ being the key word here LOL)… enter french fries, chips and the like. But we try to have the ‘everything in moderation’ approach and I also don’t believe in depriving yourself of every food-pleasure out there.
With that said, we definitely teach our boys what it means to stay healthy and what not to eat (ever) and what to be cautious of. Our younger, Elliot, is finally old enough that he understands these things and so we talk about them with both our boys. My husband has made it his mission to teach them about these things and talk to them like they are adults; no beating around the bush here!
One of the things that our boys know not to eat are food colorings of any kind. So Leo, our older son, now that he can read, he manages to do so himself at the store. Elliot needs a little help in that department LOL but he knows that we don’t allow artificial food colorings, period. By the way, did you know that in European countries artificial food colorings are illegal and cannot be added to foods? Yes! They are extremely unhealthy and have been linked to cancers so no thank you!
But guys, we may not allow the above, but we definitely compensate for it in other departments LOL! Especially my hubby; that man has the biggest sweet tooth. Eliminating sugars is impossible so we at least try and pick those sweets that are decently healthy (like dark chocolate) or fruit based. Luckily, our boys love all things fruit so many times fruit is like a dessert in our house and on top of it our boys will often not even finish a piece of cake or candy and they’ll just say it’s simply too sweet for them LOL! Again, we got lucky! Those particular things may not be too sweet for me (or my hubs), but hey, if they won’t eat them, I am not making them haha!
Some of our boys’ favorite snacks (besides said fruits) are these Z Bars oatmeal cookie snacks (by the way, not sponsored, simply sharing which snacks our kids love). That particular oatmeal flavor I linked is their favorite and Leo gets it in his lunch box everyday. They come in other flavors too like chocolate brownie, chocolate chip or peanut butter. All organic! And I will say this – ever since we discovered them, they’ve been a savior in many situations LOL! They are so filling and we always pack them when we leave the house. They saved us many a times at a park or a playground, just saying… 🙂
Other favorites are these Trader Joe’s jelly beans (no artificial food colorings!). I mean, who doesn’t like jelly beans I ask?
Just like the Z Bars I mentioned above, these mini muffins from Aldi are THE.BEST! They come in small bags with few of those inside and make a great snack to pack to school. They come in a few flavor options and we like the blueberry ones the most.
And lastly, these little gizmos a.k.a. Trader Joe’s fruit peel-away buttons! Oh my gosh! If you are or have been a fruit leather person then you need to try these. I admit, I probably love these the most in our house but my boys love these too! They make such a great snack and will get you that sweet fix if you need it!
